Michigan Supreme Court docket Chief Justice stepping down

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan Supreme Court docket Chief Justice Elizabeth T. Clement will likely be stepping down by the tip of April, she introduced Wednesday.

“Immediately, I notified Governor Whitmer I will likely be stepping down from the Michigan Supreme Court docket no later than April 30, 2025. Clement was initially appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court docket in November 2017 and elected to a full time period within the 2018 common election. She was chosen unanimously by the Court docket to function Chief Justice in November 2022, and was re-elected to that put up twice, as soon as in January 2023 and as soon as in January 2025.

Throughout her time on the Court docket, Clement has served because the Court docket’s co-liaison to the State Court docket Administrative Workplace Division of Youngster Welfare Companies, which assists juvenile courts relating to issues corresponding to youngster protecting proceedings, foster care, and adoption.

“Our team at the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) has consistently made it clear that no one works harder in the fight to make our justice system more efficient, more accessible, more transparent, more accountable, and more data driven. I am especially proud of the work we have done to increase our capacity to collect and analyze data by connecting local trial courts to a statewide system. At the same time, our efforts to support implementation of juvenile justice reform will ultimately make sure every youth who needs help can get the support they need to succeed. Most of all, SCAO has become a force for good toward achieving our shared goal of a justice system that works better for everyone.”
