LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Greater than 400 Michigan State College Extension workers are actually represented by a union.
As of Feb. 24, these workers, who work as college liaisons doing fieldwork throughout the state, are represented by the Union of Non-Tenure Monitor College (UNTF/AFT 1855) at MSU.
“I’m really excited for the opportunity to move forward alongside my colleagues,” says Barslud Judd, an Extension employee who works as a consumer horticulture educator in Genesee County. “Extension spoke loud and clear. We are better and stronger together.”
In response to the union, workers voted “overwhelmingly” in favor of unionizing, and are actually gearing as much as discount their first contract.
“I’m excited and impressed by the arduous work the Extension Organizing Committee put into this marketing campaign,” says Victor Rodriguez-Pereira, president of UNTF. “It is a well timed victory for labor in Michigan. Extension school are central to the land-grant mission of MSU, and the UNTF is trying ahead to serving to them get the working circumstances they deserve.“
In response to the union, the workers are aiming to barter higher working circumstances “that reflect their contributions to the university and the public.”
