MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WOOD) — A person who shot and injured a Muskegon Heights officer after which fired at different individuals within the neighborhood died after being shot by officers, police say.

The scenario began round 7:45 a.m. Monday on Baker Avenue south of E. Barney Avenue. The Muskegon Heights Police Division says an officer came across a “disturbance” whereas on the way in which to work. The officer stopped to assist, at which level there was an “exchange of gunfire” with the suspect, police stated.

The officer was shot. He was handled at a neighborhood hospital and launched the identical day. Chief Maurice Sain informed Information 8 and he was “doing well.”

The officer radioed for assist and different officers quickly arrived.

About 5 minutes later, the suspected shooter was noticed a number of blocks away on the porch of a house on Reynolds Avenue between E. Hovey and E. Hume avenues. Police say he shot at a passing automobile, however nobody in it was harm.

Neighbor Danyell Watkins informed Information 8 he noticed somebody with a gun working towards his automobile as he was making ready to go to work. He stated the person shot at his automobile and one other automobile.

“He shot at the car a couple times,” Watkins stated. “He shot at me multiple times.”

Neither Watkins nor any of his passengers have been harm.

“Everyone was scared. Everybody was running,” Watkins stated. “It was a lot of chaos.”

A house owner then shot the shooter, injuring him, police say. The shooter returned fireplace and ran away, police say. The house owner was not harm.

Officers on the first scene on Baker heard the gunfire and headed towards Reynolds. A Muskegon Heights and metropolis of Muskegon officer quickly discovered the shooter in an alley behind a home on the following avenue over, Howden Avenue.

Police say the shooter refused to drop his gun and “appeared to point the weapon at one of the officers.” Each officers opened fireplace, hitting the shooter. He was rushed to the hospital, the place he was pronounced useless.

“I heard some gunshots. Wife came told me it was a bunch of police. We looked out the window seen the action going on back here. Then from here, they rolled down this side street past my house and I heard some more gunshots,” neighbor Scottie McKinley stated.

He stated he was nervous the bullets may have hit his grandchildren and neighbors.

“I know the bullets that leave the chamber don’t have a name on them, so that is a concern,” McKinley stated.

Police didn’t instantly launch the title of the person who died, however stated he was needed on two counts of assault and a weapons cost as a routine offender after fees have been issued Thursday.

The officers who opened fireplace have been positioned on administrative go away. Michigan State Police have taken over the investigation. All that’s normal follow.
