New York: Sebastian Zapeta charged with homicide and arson after girl set on hearth on subway

A person has been charged over the demise of a girl who was set on hearth on a New York subway prepare.

Police and federal officers stated Sebastian Zapeta, a 33-year-old Guatemalan citizen, was charged with homicide and arson on Monday.

He allegedly used a lighter to set hearth to the girl’s garments whereas she seemed to be dozing at round 7.30am (12.30pm UK time) on Sunday.

The New York Police Division stated Zapeta was arrested about six hours after the incident, which occurred on a stationary F prepare on the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station in Brooklyn.

Jessica Tisch, New York Metropolis police commissioner, stated the girl’s garments “became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds” whereas he watched from a bench on the subway platform.

Subway employees and cops patrolling the station used hearth extinguishers to place out the fireplace.

The lady, whose identification has not been launched, was pronounced useless on the scene.

Officers added there appeared to have been no prior interplay between Zapeta and the girl.

He was arrested after three faculty kids referred to as 911 after they recognised him from a picture shared by police.

Ms Tisch referred to as the alleged homicide “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being”.

Brooklyn district legal professional Eric Gonzalez added in a press release: “The depravity of this horrific crime is beyond comprehension, and my office is committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice.

“This ugly and mindless act of violence in opposition to a susceptible girl can be met with essentially the most severe penalties.”

Jeff Carter, a spokesman for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, stated the suspect entered the nation illegally after being eliminated in 2018.

The US Division of Homeland Safety stated it was unclear when or the place Zapeta had re-entered the nation.

It added it will once more pursue elimination proceedings each time he’s launched from New York custody – which could possibly be after a jail sentence if he’s convicted.
