No summer time courses required for Northern Michigan colleges impacted by ice storm

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed new laws Monday, giving 1000’s of scholars impacted by March’s historic ice storm a break from attendance necessities.

Michigan legislation requires that each college 12 months, districts meet a minimal of 1,058 hours and 180 days of pupil instruction. Nonetheless, many college districts in northern Michigan had been unable to satisfy these necessities resulting from widespread injury and energy outages.

HB 4345 permits college districts positioned at the very least partially within the following counties, the place the governor declared a state of emergency in March, to waive as much as an extra 15 days of instruction for the 2024-2025 college 12 months:

Alcona

Alpena

Antrim

Charlevoix

Cheboygan

Crawford

Emmet

Mackinac

Montmorency

Oscoda

Otsego

Presque Isle

State officers say the laws will save colleges cash and sources, as they might not have to remain open in the course of the summer time. This is able to save them from having to pay instructor and employees salaries, constructing utilities, and different working bills in the course of the summer time.

The invoice handed the Home unanimously and handed the Senate 35-2.
