North Korea check fires new intercontinental missile – and warns it’s ‘bolstering nuclear forces’

North Korea says it has test-fired an upgraded, long-range missile, claiming it’s the “world’s most powerful strategic deterrent”.

The US, South Korea and Japan detected the launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) – believed to be a brand new, extra agile rocket – which comes simply days earlier than the US election.

In a press release launched by state media, North Korean chief Kim Jong Un stated: “I affirm that the DPRK [North Korea] will never change its line of bolstering up its nuclear forces.”

He added the missile launch was “an appropriate military action” after North Korea’s “rivals… intentionally escalated the regional situation”.

The assertion stated North Korea had “demonstrated the modernity and creditability of its world’s most powerful strategic deterrent”.

The launch early on Thursday was the longest ballistic missile check by North Korea, with a flight-time of 87 minutes, in keeping with South Korea.

Seoul’s joint chiefs of employees consider the rocket was a brand new sort of solid-fuelled ICBM.

Japan’s defence minister Gen Nakatani advised reporters the missile’s flight period and its most altitude of greater than 7,000km (4,350 miles) exceeded earlier North Korean missile checks.

North Korea final test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile in December 2023 when it launched the solid-fuelled Hwasong-18.

Thursday’s launch got here simply hours after US defence secretary Lloyd Austin and his South Korean counterpart Kim Yong-hyun met in Washington to sentence North Korea’s troop deployment in Russia.

A day earlier, Seoul reported indicators the North could test-launch an ICBM or nuclear check across the US presidential election on Tuesday, an try to attract consideration to its army energy.

US nationwide safety council spokesperson Sean Savett stated the launch “needlessly raises tensions and risks destabilising the security situation in the region”.

He added it was “a flagrant violation” of a number of UN Safety Council resolutions.
