Jacques Piraux, mayor of Jonquieres village, informed broadcaster BFM TV: “It’s a scene of sadness and desolation.

“It seems to be like a lunar panorama, all the pieces is burned.

Dutch nationwide Renate Koot, who was on vacation in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse along with her companion, stated: “One moment we were on the phone with our children … thinking, ‘look, a fire’.

Residents and vacationers have been suggested to stay indoors until informed to evacuate by firefighters.

Two campsites have been evacuated as a precaution.
