Owosso man proposes security adjustments at mid-Michigan park

OWOSSO, Mich. (WLNS) — An Owosso man is urging metropolis officers to make adjustments to Curwood Citadel Park, claiming the present circumstances are a danger for kids and the aged.

Owosso resident Steven McMurray says the circumstances on the park encompass uneven stairs, no handrails, and no indicators to warn guests.

(WLNS)

He says he would set up a 42-inch guardrail with a mid-rail and kick board alongside the riverfront, restore and change stairs with uniform treads, and safe handrails, in addition to add warning signage and non-slip surfaces.

McMurray says his proposed security enhancements are near house for him and his household, as a result of his mom, Tina McMurray, died in September 2010 from an unintended drowning within the Shiawassee River.

“From what we were told by the police, she had an injury to her head, consistent with the slip and fall,” said McMurray. “She was, like I said, found down the river a little bit. So, it’s my belief that she potentially could have used this area.”

That’s why he’s doing all he can to verify an incident like that doesn’t occur to anybody else.

“I think that the hazards of this area have not been addressed in a very long time, and I think that if there was any chance that it was something that could cause anybody else in the future injury or harm,” said McMurray. “I think that even if my mother wasn’t involved with an accident here, I think that this is something serious that needs to be addressed for the public.”

McMurray says all the mission could be round $75,000 to $150,000, and to date, he says he’s obtained help from native companies like Faucet Home Specialty Meat Market, River Fab and Welding, Inc.

“To be able to do something to address the fact that this is something that could potentially lead to my mother’s death,” said McMurray. “I think that the biggest thing now is to address the future.”

McMurray says he can be presenting his plan to the town’s Parks and Recreation Fee assembly on Aug. 27.
