Persistent losing illness present in Osceola County deer

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan Division of Agriculture and Rural Improvement (MDARD) has confirmed experiences of continual losing illness (CWD) in a white-tailed deer in Osceola County.

MDARD says the illness was present in a seven-year-old deer whereas conducting a state-wide CWD surveillance program.

CWD is a deadly neurological illness that impacts white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose and different cervid species. The illness may be transmitted from one animal to a different and thru the surroundings.

Animals might seem like wholesome for an prolonged interval whereas contaminated. Ultimately, it would show irregular habits, progressive weight reduction, and bodily debilitation within the later levels of the illness.

“Limiting the spread and impact of CWD on Michigan’s farmed cervid herds hinges on the ability to detect the disease early and respond promptly,” mentioned State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland.

Since 2008, together with this new case, CWD has been detected at 16 Michigan deer farms within the following counties:

Kent – 2

Lake – 1

Mecosta – 4

Montcalm – 4

Newaygo – 4

Osceola – 1
