A Lebanese pop star turned needed Islamist militant has appeared in courtroom after 12 years on the run.

Fadel Chaker had been hiding in Palestinian refugee camp Ein el-Hilweh since bloody road clashes erupted between Sunni Muslim militants and the Lebanese military in June 2013 within the coastal metropolis of Sidon.

He was sentenced to 22 years in jail in 2020 for offering assist to a “terrorist group” after being tried in absentia.

As a part of the deal that persuaded Chaker to show himself in, the sentences he obtained whereas on the run can be dropped.

He would even be questioned in preparation to face trial on new costs of committing crimes towards the navy.

Tuesday’s courtroom look was a preliminary questioning session.

In the course of the 2013 shootout, which killed not less than 18 troopers, Chaker appeared in a YouTube video calling his enemies pigs and canines.

He additionally taunted the navy, saying “we have two rotting corpses that we snatched from you yesterday”.

This was an obvious reference to slain troopers.

Chaker shot to fame within the Arab world with a smash hit in 2002.

Some 10 years later, he appeared to have fallen underneath the affect of hard-line Sunni cleric Sheikh Ahmad al Assir.

Chaker shocked followers by turning up subsequent to the cleric at rallies and later stated he was giving up singing to turn out to be nearer to God.

In July, Chaker and his son Mohammed launched a brand new music that has garnered greater than 100 million views on YouTube.
