'Put money into our youngsters': Gun violence advocates react to taking pictures of three teenagers

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Three teenagers had been shot Thursday night time in Lansing, and as police proceed to research the incident, advocates locally are providing their ideas on the difficulty of gun violence within the capital metropolis.

Thursday night time, within the 3800 block of Wilson Ave., a neighborhood close to the Capital Area Worldwide Airport, police discovered three teenagers aged 16, 17, and 19 with gunshot wounds. All three of them are anticipated to outlive, in keeping with the Lansing Police Division.

Daniel Boggan, a technique supervisor with the group Advance Peace Michigan says his group instantly responded to the taking pictures. The group has operated within the Lansing space since 2022, when Boggan says there was a big spike in gun-related murders.

He says since two of the victims in Thursday’s taking pictures had been minors, Advance Peace will give attention to colleges within the space to offer mentorship to victims of gun violence.

“We’re always assessing the situation and trying to build relationships with those individuals who may be victims or the victims families. So we can get as much information. To make sure we can get in front of anything that could be bad in in the future,” stated Boggan. “In a roundtable type meeting with the superintendents, our Superintendent here in Lansing, Ben Shuldiner and try to make sure that our schools are safe as well and nothing spills over.”

In the meantime, gun violence activist Mickey McKissic lives by one creed — placing hammers as a substitute of weapons into youngsters’ fingers, to steer these falling into a lifetime of violence in the appropriate path via his basis MIckey23.

“These benches was built last week, and so when we built these benches,” stated McKissic. “These kids, they sanded it down. They made all the cuts.”

McKissic says when he heard of the taking pictures, he says he solely had just a few questions.

“We wonder why there’s 16 and 17-year-olds not in school? That’s one,” McKissic stated. “And then for the 19-year-old… Does he or her [have] a job?”

McKissic urges different group members to assist mentor those that are strolling down the improper path hoping they’ll break the cycle.

“If we don’t continue to invest in our kids, if they fail, we fail,” he stated. “If they succeed, we succeed. And that’s just in a nutshell.”

6 Information has reached out to the Lansing Faculty District for remark, however now we have but to listen to again from them. Lansing Mayor Andy Schor provided his ideas on the taking pictures, saying that LPD will work onerous to trace down and arrest the particular person accountable.
