Reminiscence café opens to assist these with reminiscence loss

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A brand new reminiscence café is launching in Lansing, and the primary gathering will probably be on Thursday afternoon.

AARP describes it as a “new neighborhood useful resource providing a welcoming, supportive surroundings for people dwelling with reminiscence loss or dementia and the relations and mates who take care of them.

The Higher Lansing Reminiscence Café is changing Ethel’s Place, which opened in 2023. AARP used to hire out The Venue close to the Lansing Mall. This new reminiscence café will happen on the East Lansing Hannah Group Heart for the foreseeable future.

“Social isolation is a real challenge for people living with memory loss and their caregivers,” State Director for AARP Michigan Paula Cunningham mentioned in a information launch despatched to six Information. “This café is about restoring connection, joy and understanding, and ensuring no one walks this journey alone.”

Dr. Michael Shafer, director of neuropsychology at College of Michigan Well being-Sparrow, is the co-founder of the Higher Lansing Care Basis, which is partnering with AARP.

“For those living with memory loss, opportunities for social engagement can be limited yet they are critical for emotional well-being and quality of life,” Shafer mentioned. “The memory café offers a safe, stigma-free space where participants and their caregivers can connect, share experiences and simply enjoy time together.”

The primary gathering of the reminiscence café will happen on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 1:00 p.m. to three:00 p.m. on the Hannah Group Heart in East Lansing on the intersection of Abbot Street and Burcham Drive.
