Rep. Tom Barrett, former helicopter pilot, provides perception on Potomac River crash

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — An investigation is underway after a collision between a passenger airplane and a navy helicopter close to Ronald Reagan Nationwide Airport resulted within the deaths of 67 individuals. Michigan’s latest congressman, U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett (R-7) was a navy helicopter pilot, and he sat down with 6 Information Thursday to supply some perception.

“Military aircraft, military helicopters are not equipped with the civilian system that has the air accident collision avoidance system,” says Barrett. “So, a lot of your civilian aircraft, certainly airliners like that that are commercial airliners have a system built in that’s an air collision avoidance system, but military aircraft, military helicopters are generally not equipped with that. So the cockpit instrumentation in the helicopter would probably not alert the pilot to what was around them.”
