The Division of Pure Assets (DNR) stories that Carlson was bowfishing at Plum Creek on the morning of June 29 when he caught the behemoth.

This fish smashes the earlier flathead catfish report of 53.35 kilos, 43 inches, caught in 2022 by Lloyd Tanner, of Hobart, Indiana, on the St. Joseph River in Berrien County.

DNR fisheries biologist John Buszkiewicz verified Carlson’s report, saying that he and his crew might have caught the identical fish throughout a survey in the identical location in 2020. The fish caught by the group weighed 55 kilos and measured 43 inches.

Carlson, a self-described “true fishoholic,” instructed the DNR that, “I thought I was about to shoot a channel catfish for dinner. Turns out, I guess we do have flathead catfish in these waters.”

Michigan’s state-record fish are acknowledged by weight solely. A fish should exceed the present state-record weight and be checked on an authorized industrial scale to qualify. A DNR fisheries biologist will then confirm the identification.
