Sinn Fein chief Mary Lou McDonald says she’s going to demand a referendum on Irish unity in her first cellphone name with Sir Keir Starmer if she wins Eire’s common election.

Ms McDonald, who describes Friday’s ballot as “an historic opportunity” to elect Eire’s first feminine prime minister (taoiseach), expects a vote on Irish reunification to happen by 2030.

She mentioned: “I think that the process of reunification has to be at the heart of government.

“Clearly, the opposite points round housing and healthcare, all of the bread-and-butter points… are critically vital.

“But the central question for all of us now is what does Ireland look like in five years’ time, in 10 years’ time?”

“I imagine that we’ll have the referendums on this decade. I feel that could be a needed factor.

“It can’t constantly be the elephant in the room,” she added.

Sinn Fein gained the favored vote within the final common election in 2020, however slipped within the polls over the past yr, largely resulting from a disconnect with its base over immigration.

With the newest polling indicating some restoration, the celebration is fielding a document 71 candidates this time within the hope of changing the centre-right Effective Gael/Fianna Fail coalition.

Requested how she would handle the connection with the incoming Trump administration, given Eire’s stance on the Center East however reliance on US funding, Ms McDonald acknowledged it might be difficult.

She mentioned: “I don’t think President Trump would be one bit surprised to hear from an Irish taoiseach, particularly a Sinn Fein taoiseach, [on] our position on Palestine.

“The necessity to finish the genocide, the necessity to cease arming Israel, the necessity for Israel to be held to account, and for worldwide legislation to be revered.

“Can you do that and at the same time maintain this economic relationship? I believe you can, and I believe we must.”

“I suppose the alchemy, the chemistry of getting this right is about balancing those things.

“I imagine it may be accomplished. Possibly as a result of I am a lady and we naturally multi-task, however that does not fill me with any trepidation in any respect,” she added.
