State Home passes plan to call freeway after slain Hillsdale deputy

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan Home of Representatives has handed a plan to dedicate a portion of M-34 in Hillsdale County to Deputy Sheriff William Butler, Jr., who was shot and killed throughout a visitors cease final yr.

The invoice was first launched within the Senate, and would dedicate the portion of freeway M-34 in Hillsdale County between Pioneer Rd and S Pittsford Rd because the “Deputy Sheriff William Butler, Jr. Memorial Highway.”

Butler, a Hillsdale County sheriff’s deputy and Michigan Military Nationwide Guard veteran, was shot and killed in June 2024 whereas helping with a visitors cease. Police say when Butler tried to arrest the person he pulled over, the person pulled out a gun and shot him. Butler was taken to the hospital by one other deputy, the place he died of his accidents. He’s survived by his spouse, Sarah, 5 kids, and two grandchildren.

If signed into legislation, non-public funding would utterly cowl the price of erecting and sustaining the freeway markers, as required underneath state legislation. The invoice now goes to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk for potential signature into legislation.

As for the person police say shot Butler, 34-year-old Eric Michael Fiddler, he himself was shot and killed by Michigan State Police troopers after a prolonged manhunt, when legislation enforcement say he shot on the troopers, prompting them to return fireplace.

Michigan Lawyer Basic Dana Nessel completed her evaluate of the incident in March, discovering the troopers justified.
