PEWAMO-WESTPHALIA, Mich. (WLNS)—A mid-Michigan faculty is preserving a particular custom alive—the “Big Game” between the Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates and the Clinton County Particular Schooling Cougars. 

Luke Pohl, former Pirates head coach and present CCRESA coach, says the sport has been happening for 13 years.

“The kids from RESA look forward to this thing from day one,” stated Pohl. 

A Clinton County Cougar participant says that is his first time being on the court docket to play in opposition to the Pirates. 

“Now, we’re simply actually excited to be right here, to play basketball with PW, it’s simply very enjoyable,” He stated. 

It’s an occasion that individuals within the Pewamo-Westphalia mark on their calendars yearly. Pohl says all of it started at CCRESA. They began a pleasant recreation of basketball and introduced the sport to Pewamo-Westphalia.

Now, it’s a group custom everybody is aware of and loves. 

Pohl says the sport isn’t about profitable or dropping, it’s about forming a connection along with your neighbors. 

“They get the opportunity to be with special needs kids, and hopefully, as time goes by, and they run into them throughout the communities or stores,” said Pohl. “They recall them and talk to them, and just understand that there’s nothing wrong with them.” 

Brady Heckman, PW’s level and taking pictures guard, says the “Big Game” holds a particular place in his coronary heart. 

“Playing this game, it just shows how much we build as a community,” stated Heckman. “As gamers, we benefit from the heck out of it. It is only a nice expertise, and it is a terrific bonding expertise for us too.”
