Tube and rail fares in London to rise by 4.6% subsequent March

Tube and rail fares in London will go up by 4.6% from subsequent March, the capital’s mayor has mentioned.

The hike matches the rise in regulated prepare fares for England’s mainline railway.

From 2 March, Transport for London’s (TfL) each day caps will improve by 40p-70p, relying on what zones are travelled by.

Labour mayor Sadiq Khan mentioned ministers had advised him an increase was essential to safe “funding for key transport projects”.

In the meantime, London bus and tram fares will probably be frozen at £1.75 for limitless journeys inside an hour.

Mr Khan mentioned: “Londoners know from my record that wherever possible I’ve made TfL fares more affordable and fairer for Londoners – whether through the introduction of the Hopper bus fare or freezing TfL fares for five years as mayor.

“Important nationwide authorities funding will enable us to progress thrilling future initiatives, reminiscent of Superloop 2 and extra upgrades to the Tube community, as we proceed constructing a fairer, safer and greener London for everybody.”

A Division for Transport (DfT) spokesperson mentioned that in October’s finances, Chancellor Rachel Reeves introduced TfL would obtain practically £500m in further funding.

Elevating fares was not a situation of funding introduced within the finances, DfT said.

UK rail journey ‘significantly expensive’

The hike to Tube and rail providers, within the capital and England, comes after evaluation discovered prepare operators serving the UK are the costliest in Europe.
