A volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland has erupted for the seventh time since December, prompting evacuation orders.

Orange lava gushed from a fissure nearly two miles lengthy after the eruption began with little warning simply after 11pm on Wednesday.

Whereas the eruption doesn’t pose a menace to air journey, the authorities warned of gasoline emissions throughout elements of the peninsula, together with the close by city of Grindavik.

Repeated volcanic eruptions near the city, which has a inhabitants of three,800, have broken infrastructure and property and compelled many residents to depart for their very own security.

In August, police issued a state of emergency after a 2.4 mile-long crack opened up on the Sundhnukagigar crater close to Grindavik, sending lava flowing each east and west.

The newest exercise is estimated to be significantly smaller than August’s eruption, in response to Iceland’s meteorological workplace that displays seismic exercise.

Geophysics professor Magnus Tumi Guomundsson, who flew over the scene with Iceland’s civil safety company, instructed RUV “in the big picture” the eruption was smaller than these in each Might and August.

“Grindavik is not in danger as it looks and it is unlikely that this crack will get any longer, although nothing can be ruled out,” he mentioned.

Iceland, which sits above a volcanic sizzling spot within the North Atlantic, averages one eruption each 4 to 5 years.

Essentially the most disruptive in current occasions was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed clouds of ash into the environment and disrupted trans-Atlantic air journey for months.
