'We wish to be at peace': Dimondale church combating for occupancy

DIMONDALE, Mich. (WLNS) — Tonight, leaders from a brand new church in Dimondale plan to battle to maintain its doorways open. The homeowners of the Sanctum of One God Church on the Tarrington will likely be talking on the Windsor Township Board of Trustees assembly about working restrictions they’re going through.

The difficulty? A certificates of occupancy and a cease-and-desist letter from the township they acquired final October.

“There’s nothing that we’re seeking to do that isn’t consistent with being a church,” stated Lawyer for Clark Hill Stephon Bagne.

Bagne represents Don and Kathy Hamilyon, the homeowners of the church, who additionally personal the constructing the place it is positioned. The lawyer says there’s a Windsor Township zoning ordinance in place proper now that forestalls the church from internet hosting sure occasions, equivalent to weddings, funerals, and baptisms.

“If you’ll recognize that our use is grandfathered in and we can be a church, then we’ll waive the unconstitutional taking that you have imposed by not allowing them to use the facility since October,” Bagne stated.

On July 8, the township issued a short lived certificates of occupancy permitting the church for use for under 10 hours every week for issues equivalent to prayer companies and Bible research.

“We’ve had to turn down a couple of Bible study groups because of this, just because we didn’t have occupancy and access to the building,” stated Eliza Hamilton, a co-owner of the Tarrington and Don and Kathy’s daughter.
