Who’re the Alawites going through a brand new wave of violence in Syria?

After three months of relative peace, there have been assaults within the Latakia area between fighters loyal to the deposed president Bashar al Assad and forces affiliated to Syria’s new rulers.

What occurred earlier this month?

Syrian safety forces began battling fighters loyal to Assad as violence broke out on 6, 7 and eight March, largely within the coastal area of western Syria, which is closely populated by the members of the Alawite minority.

Human rights organisations say as many as 1,300 individuals had been killed over the 72 hours of violence – together with civilians, militia fighters and safety officers,
