Why are there a whole lot of useless fish within the Tecumseh Park pond?

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Lots of and a whole lot of useless fish are lining components of the shore of the Tecumseh Park pond, and individuals are questioning why.

Jeff Johnston, a spokesperson for the Michigan Division of Setting Nice Lakes and Expertise (EGLE) says there may very well be two major causes.

“There are two broad categories here for fish kills. they can be naturally occurring and often are, or they can have a man-made cause, related to pollution or some other kind of contamination,” mentioned Johnston.

Matthew Edmonds, an out of doors fanatic who visits the park recurrently, says he believes an absence of rainfall could also be responsible.

“Other than this, we’ve had pretty limited rainfall here the last month or so… you don’t have enough water making its way down into this body of water,” mentioned Edmonds.

Though the trigger may very well be both pure or artifical, Johnston says you must look under the floor to search out out.

“There’s also a sighting of a sheen on the water. a lot of people associate that sheen with petroleum contamination… a sheen can have a natural cause and often does,” mentioned Johnston.

Johnston says EGLE staff consider the sheen is pure and brought on by some form of micro organism.

Fish die-offs aren’t all that unusual, however some say they’ve by no means seen it fairly like this at Tecumseh Park.

Edmonds, when requested if he had ever seen this earlier than, mentioned “Nothing like this, this is quite a lot of fish, and I have not seen any live fish at all.”
