The world is coming into a brand new nuclear age with a proliferation of weapons and applied sciences, the pinnacle of the UK armed forces has warned.

Admiral Radakin, beforehand higher often known as an optimist, stated his job was to “stiffen the nation’s resolve” within the face of rising safety dangers.

“The outlook is more contested, more ambiguous and more dangerous than we have known in our careers,” he stated in an annual lecture on the Royal United Providers Institute (RUSI) in London.

“Nowhere is this more apparent than in the nuclear domain.”

He stated the primary nuclear age was throughout the Chilly Warfare, outlined by two opposing blocs ruled by the chance of uncontrollable escalation and the logic of deterrence.

The second nuclear age was characterised by world disarmament efforts and counter-proliferation.

“But we are at the dawn of a third nuclear age which is altogether more complex. It is defined by multiple and concurrent dilemmas, proliferating nuclear and disruptive technologies, and the almost total absence of the security architectures that went before.”

He stated this is the reason the UK’s nuclear-armed submarines – constantly at sea – are so very important.

“The UK’s nuclear deterrent is the one part of our inventory of which Russia is most aware and has more impact on [President Vladimir] Putin than anything else.”

Whereas underlining the threats, Admiral Radakin was cautious to emphasize that he didn’t imagine the UK was on the point of struggle.

“There is only a remote chance of a significant direct attack or invasion by Russia on the United Kingdom,” he stated.

“It is the same for the whole of NATO. Russia knows the response would be overwhelming, whether conventional or nuclear. The strategy of deterrence by NATO works and is working. But it has to be kept strong and strengthened against a more dangerous Russia.”
