Members of armed forces may give up over Labour’s VAT plan for personal colleges, shadow defence secretary says

The federal government’s refusal to exempt army households from paying 20% VAT on personal colleges may trigger personnel to give up, the shadow defence secretary has warned.

Talking in parliament on Monday, Defence Secretary John Healey wouldn’t agree to permit army households to be exempt from the coverage, which can start in January.

Requested if he would achieve this by Conservative shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge, Mr Healey mentioned the federal government is “looking very closely” at the way it can proceed offering a contribution to boarding college charges for army households as a part of their bundle.

He mentioned if armed forces personnel should pay the “unaffordable increases… because of this government’s ideological decision”, it may drive skilled personnel to give up.
