Genesee Co. deputy suspended, charged for allegedly leaving gun in school

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A Genesee County sheriff’s deputy has not solely been charged, however quickly suspended from obligation after police say he left a loaded gun in a faculty car parking zone in Lapeer County.

In response to the Metropolis of Lapeer Police Division, at round 6:33 a.m. on Feb. 11, officers responded to Lapeer Excessive Faculty after a faculty worker discovered a lunch field with a loaded gun inside within the college’s car parking zone.

The gun, police say, belonged to Genesee County sheriff’s deputy Jonathan Becher.

Police say Becher left the gun within the lot by mistake whereas attending a basketball sport on the college on Feb. 10, and the Lapeer County Prosecutor’s Workplace charged Becher with one depend of Reckless Use of a Firearm. That cost carries a attainable punishment of 90 days in jail and/or a $500 effective. He was arraigned Feb. 12, and launched on a $500 bond.

“The careless and reckless behavior of this 16-year veteran is inexcusable,” wrote Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in a press launch. “His actions endangered the students, staff, parents, and the community. As sheriff, I sincerely apologize to the entire student body, the school, and the Lapeer community.”

In response to Swanson, Becher has been suspended for 30 days with out pay, and he has additionally been demoted in rank. His entry to county weapons has additionally been revoked.

“Once again, I offer my apologies to the entire community,” wrote Swanson. “This incident does not reflect the exemplary work law enforcement officers perform every day, including those assigned to our schools”
