LANSING, (Mich.) WLNS — Protesters of the demolition of the previous Japanese Excessive College constructing are anticipated to make their voices heard on the metropolis council assembly Monday night time. Additionally they protested outdoors the college earlier within the day.

The group is making final efforts to save lots of the west wing and the auditorium of the college, although elements of it have already been taken down.

The constructing was purchased by Sparrow Well being in 2016, which is now owned by the College of Michigan Well being-Sparrow. Sparrow has mentioned the constructing has black mould, water leakage, and numerous asbestos.

Protesters say they’ve an emotional connection to the constructing, which has hosted college students for almost 100 years. They know the percentages are slim, however they’re prepared to struggle to reserve it.

Emily Banner, an Japanese Excessive College alumni, mentioned they’re preventing to protect historical past.

“The historical part that is in the auditorium, you know, just a historical building itself. The auditorium is what we’re trying to fight to, absolutely. There’s so much history in there, and it hasn’t been touched since 1928. Now, that’s pretty amazing,” mentioned Banner.

Sparrow plans to construct a psychological well being facility on the positioning, and so they have the ultimate say because the homeowners of the property.
