LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan has recorded its lowest charge of toddler mortality in its historical past, the Michigan Division of Well being and Human Providers (MDHHS) introduced in a information launch in the present day.

Toddler mortality is the demise of a live-born toddler earlier than its first birthday. Widespread causes of toddler mortality embrace prematurity, low delivery weight, and accidents.

The MDHHS stories that in 2023, 607 infants below the age of 1 died, and the state’s toddler mortality charge declined to six.1 toddler deaths per 1,000 stay births.

Toddler demise numbers have declined since 2022, with 650 deaths and 6.3 deaths per 1,000 stay births occurring that 12 months.

MDHHS hosted the Maternal Toddler Well being Summit this week in Kalamazoo to proceed efforts to enhance the well being of mothers and infants in Michigan.

Michigan has been working to scale back maternal and toddler mortality via applications such because the state’s 35 CenteringPregnancy’s and three CenteringParenting places, 9 regional Perinatal High quality Collaboratives, and the Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Well being (MI AIM).

In keeping with MDHHS, MI AIM helps equip hospitals with greatest practices, together with protocols that make delivery safer, enhance maternal well being outcomes, and save lives.
