A fierce wildfire pushed by gale-force winds has torn by southern Crete, forcing the evacuation of greater than 1,500 folks from houses and accommodations.

The blaze, which ignited close to the village of Achlia, within the Ierapetra space of the Greek island’s southern coast, swept throughout forests and farmland in a single day into Thursday.

Crews battled the flames with 230 firefighters and 10 plane dropping water from above.

Some residents had been evacuated by boat, and the coast guard stored six vessels on standby for additional sea rescues.

“The fire is hard to contain. Right now, they cannot stop it.”

Evacuated vacationers had been taken to a close-by basketball area and accommodations in safer components of the island, whereas cell phone alerts had been issued, urging residents to go away instantly and never return to defend their houses.
