DNA proof identifies suspect in 1994 Michigan dwelling invasion

DNA proof identifies suspect in 1994 Michigan dwelling invasion

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A suspect has been recognized in a 1994 dwelling invasion and sexual assault due to DNA proof, the Meridian Township Police Division introduced Thursday.

The proof related instances from California to Ohio.

Police recognized the suspect as Sean Patrick McNulty, born June 5, 1959. Investigators say DNA collected within the 1994 Meridian Township case was entered into the Mixed DNA Index System, or CODIS, and in 2005 matched proof from instances in Birmingham, Michigan and Columbus, Ohio.

In 2024, additional matches have been present in instances from the Eighties in Ventura, California, in accordance with police.

Detectives credited advances in forensic know-how and assist from the FBI’s Violent Legal Apprehension Program and the Columbus Police Division Crime Lab.

McNulty is initially from Ventura and served within the U.S. navy. He died by suicide in 1997 after he was charged in a Bloomington, Indiana, dwelling invasion and sexual assault, police stated.

McNulty was by no means arrested or charged within the Meridian Township case. Police stated they hope the identification helps convey some type of closure to the victims and their households.
