Michigan senators introduce invoice to fund SNAP and WIC throughout shutdown

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Senate Democrats have launched a invoice that might fund SNAP and WIC amid the continuing federal authorities shutdown by forcing the USDA to launch “contingency funds.”

U.S. Sen. Gary Peters and U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin, each Michigan Democrats, have been among the many legislators who launched the Preserve SNAP and WIC Funded Act of 2025, which might require the USDA to proceed to fund the packages throughout the federal government shutdown.

“At a time when our families are already facing rising prices for everyday goods, the Trump Administration is playing politics and holding up resources that help Michiganders put food on the table,” Peters mentioned.

The invoice would see the USDA pull “unappropriated” funds to offer “uninterrupted” funding to SNAP and WIC, and reimburse the states for any prices related to protecting SNAP and WIC advantages.

“No American should ever go hungry due to political gridlock,” Slotkin mentioned. “The administration has each the authority and the sources to maintain vitamin packages operating.”

The invoice has been referred to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
