Banana duct-taped to a wall sells for .2m at public sale

A banana duct-taped to a wall has offered for $6.2m (£4.9m) at an public sale in New York.

The conceptual artwork piece, referred to as Comic, grew to become a viral sensation after Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan debuted it at Artwork Basel Miami Seaside in 2019.

Festivalgoers tried to make out whether or not the only piece of fruit caught to a white wall with silver tape was a joke or cheeky commentary on questionable requirements amongst artwork collectors.

The Sotheby’s public sale home stated it was the announcement of a brand new authentic work by the outstanding and provocative artist Cattelan that originally captured the world’s consideration, however Comic “quickly erupted into a viral global sensation that drew record crowds, social media inundation, landed the cover of The New York Post, and divided viewers and critics alike”.

Now Justin Solar, founding father of cryptocurrency platform TRON, has paid $6.2m at an public sale for a certificates of authenticity that provides him the authority to duct-tape a banana to a wall and name it “Comedian.”

Mr Solar stated Comic “represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community”.

However the newest model will not final lengthy – as a result of he will eat it.

“Additionally, in the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honouring its place in both art history and popular culture,” Mr Solar stated.

The Sotheby’s public sale noticed bidding begin at $800,000 and enhance to multi-millions inside minutes, with the auctioneer joking: “Don’t let it slip away.”

Lucius Elliot, head of up to date marquee gross sales at Sotheby’s, stated there was a lot debate over “whether this is art, whether it is a prank, whether it is a symbol of the excess of the art market”.
