LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A invoice that may see the destruction of some firearms within the state of Michigan led to some individuals getting emotional whereas testifying on the Capitol Tuesday.

HB 6144 would require police departments to destroy all firearms they acquired from buyback applications or weapons that had been forfeited on account of against the law.

It has acquired a combined response from lawmakers and the general public.

“[There’s] one person who testified… I was watching a video of him committing things that I know are serious state and federal offenses,” says Tom Lambert, legislative director of Michigan Open Carry. “I’m wondering why there’s been no prosecution yet.”

One speaker who testified says destroying voluntarily-turned-in weapons received’t resolve the difficulty as a result of criminals wouldn’t flip them in within the first place.

Others say the proprietor of the gun ought to have a say in what occurs to them when they’re turned in.

A person opposing the invoice says he sees hypocrisy on the opposite facet, whereas these in favor say present legal guidelines don’t successfully cast off the weapon.

“Folks were turning in their guns thinking that, voluntarily turning in their weapons, they wanted to turn them in, and they thought that they were being destroyed but they weren’t,” says State Rep. Felicia Brabec (D-Pittsfield Township). “In fact, they were then being recirculated, parts of them were being recirculated and it was easy to then create a new weapon.”
