LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) has helped reintroduce a invoice to Congress that may “modernize weather radio equipment,” searching for to enhance the reliability of communication companies throughout extreme climate.

The NOAA Climate Radio Modernization Act would increase emergency communications for areas with insufficient or no mobile service.

Moreover, the Nationwide Institute of Requirements and Know-how (NIST) would develop requirements for flash flood emergency alerts in areas throughout the nation, together with Michigan.

Peters says that the invoice would additionally make sure positions which are “critical to ensuring public safety” on the Nationwide Climate Service exempt from hiring freezes.

“In our state, weather can change on a dime. That`s why we must have modernized and accessible emergency alert systems, as well as a team of full-time meteorologists working around the clock to notify the public as quickly as possible,” stated Peters in a information launch despatched to six Information.

“This bill would help protect 24/7 weather monitoring and ensure we can keep our communities informed and protected when severe weather hits.”
