Man jailed after burgling Damien Hirst’s studio whereas carrying GPS tag

A person who burgled considered one of Damien Hirst’s studios and was caught by police who traced the actions of his GPS-enabled ankle tag has been jailed.

Liam Middleton-Gomm broke into Thames Wharf Studios in west London on 30 June and stole round £5,130 of products, together with digital gadgets, clothes and a pram.

The 36-year-old, of no mounted abode, smashed the window beside a fireplace exit and reached in to activate its shutter and enter the constructing, prosecutor Paul Andrews advised Kingston Crown Courtroom on Thursday.

The burglar, who has dozens of earlier convictions, had attended the studio twice that night and went to his father’s property with a few of the stolen items, the courtroom heard.

It’s understood Middleton-Gomm stole a number of leather-based jackets that have been being embellished, in addition to trousers, embroidered shirts and a Dior pram with silver skulls on its wheels.

A few of the property was offered on and has not been recovered.

Middleton-Gomm’s father, Leslie Gomm, 62, of Fulham, west London, beforehand pleaded responsible to dealing with stolen items for his son’s profit.

He was given a one-year conditional discharge on Thursday after having been in custody for 3 and a half months earlier than his sentencing.

The prosecution mentioned Middleton-Gomm visited his father’s property twice that night, however Gomm didn’t know the studio was being burgled.

Police charged the burglar after analyzing information from his GPS ankle tag and DNA on the scene, Mr Andrews advised the courtroom.

Decide Martyn Barklem sentenced Middleton-Gomm to 32 months in jail.

He mentioned: “You were actually wearing a GPS tag that was part of your licence conditions when you were carrying out these offences.”

He added: “Your appalling previous record is of course a serious aggravating factor”.

The courtroom heard Middleton-Gomm has 39 earlier convictions involving 83 offences, together with a number of home burglaries.

Middleton-Gomm had pleaded responsible to 2 counts of burgling Hirst’s riverside studio.

He was additionally sentenced for 2 home burglaries on 9 and 17 July, in addition to the tried housebreaking of a property on 9 July.
