Matilde Lorenzi: Italian teenage champion skier dies after crash

A teenage champion skier has died after a crash throughout a coaching session in Italy.

Matilde Lorenzi, 19, fell whereas snowboarding on a slope in Val Senales, northern Italy, the nation’s defence ministry mentioned.

Lorenzi was an Italian junior champion final season and her older sister Lucrezia can also be a aggressive skier, in response to Olympics.com.

Tributes poured in following her demise, together with a bunch of messages from Olympic ski stars.

Former US Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn described Lorenzi’s demise as “a tragic loss” and mentioned she was “sending [her] thoughts to her family”.

US Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin added: “So much love to her family, friends, and teammates.”

The Worldwide Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) mentioned it prolonged its “deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Matilde Lorenzi”.

“FIS is in mourning, standing by her family, friends, and everyone who cherished Matilde, honouring her memory today and always,” it added.

Lorenzi, who was connected to the Italian military, competed on the junior world championships final season, ending sixth within the downhill contest and eighth within the super-G occasion.

She additionally raced on the second-tier European Cup circuit.
