Michigan lady shares the story of her Holocaust survivor mom

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)— 80 years have handed for the reason that Holocaust, and whereas most of the survivors are now not with us, their legacies reside on in literature. 

Emily Wire Duthin is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor and writer, Edith Mayer Wire, who wrote the e book, “Finding Edith: Surviving the Holocaust: Hidden in Plain Sight.”

“She was a baby survivor of the Holocaust. She was born in Vienna, and her household went to Italy to flee the annexation of Vienna by the Nazis,” mentioned Duthin. 

Duthin says when Italy grew to become allies with Germany, her mom’s household knew they needed to depart, and utilized for visas to hunt refuge. 

“My mother describes learning geography by sitting at her kitchen table, sending in visa applications all over the world,” said Duthin. “They were denied everywhere, including in the United States.”

Her mom escaped to France till the nation fell to Nazi Germany. 

“Her brother and father were deported to Auschwitz,” said Duthin. “She went into hiding, and was hidden in various boarding schools under false papers.”  

Duthin’s mom was then smuggled to Switzerland till the conflict ended, moved again to France, and at last sought refuge in America in 1954 after the conflict ended. Though her mom handed away three years in the past, her story is what pushes Duthin to talk out towards the present political local weather. 

“The Nazis then came after people with disabilities. Well, DEI is also helping people with disabilities,” said Duthin. “Is it fallacious to worth and recognize, and respect variety? So, the place is that this conflict on DEI coming from? It’s not making America nice. it’s dividing us, and making us weaker.”
