Nationwide investigation into NHS maternity companies launched after households ‘gaslit’

A “rapid” nationwide investigation into NHS maternity companies has been launched by the federal government.

The announcement comes after Well being Secretary Wes Streeting met households who’ve misplaced infants and amid the continuing investigations at some NHS trusts into maternity care failings.

The investigation in England is meant to supply reality to households struggling hurt, in addition to driving pressing enhancements to care and security, as a part of efforts to make sure “no parent or baby is ever let down again”.

The Royal School of Midwives (RCM) welcomed the federal government’s announcement and stated maternity companies have been “at, or even beyond, breaking point”.

Final week, the NHS regulator stated maternity and neonatal companies at two Leeds hospitals had been rated insufficient over questions of safety.

Mr Streeting, who was talking on the Royal School of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) convention in London, apologised on behalf of the NHS for what households had been by and stated it was “clear something is going wrong”.

He added: “For the past year, I have been meeting bereaved families from across the country who have lost babies or suffered serious harm during what should have been the most joyful time in their lives.

“What they’ve skilled is devastating – deeply painful tales of trauma, loss, and an absence of fundamental compassion – brought on by failures in NHS maternity care that ought to by no means have occurred.

“Their bravery in speaking out has made it clear: we must act – and we must act now.”

Mr Streeting stated households have needed to “fight for truth and justice” and had described being “ignored, gaslit, lied to, manipulated and damaged further by the inability for a trust to simply be honest with them that something has gone wrong”.

The investigation will include two elements.
