Sen. Peters' statewide motorbike tour stops in Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) rolled into Lansing on his motorbike Monday, marking his ninth bike tour throughout Michigan and assembly with voters and advocates about varied points. Monday’s go to centered on packages like Medicaid and Head Begin.

Head Begin is a federally funded early childhood schooling program geared in direction of low-income youngsters and households. 

“Head Start not only prepared my son for school, but also supported our entire family,” mentioned Zhamilya Yessirkepova, mom of three who says her household benefited vastly from the Capital Space Head Begin program.

Yessirkepova now additionally serves because the coverage council chair for the group. 

“In our agency, almost 100% of families heavily rely on Medicaid,” she said. “They rely on it for mental health support, early intervention services for children with special needs, and comprehensive coverage for expecting mothers, including dental, vision, and childbirth classes…Every Head Start program has family advocates who partner with families and connect them to community resources based on the family’s needs.”

Senator Peters used his love for motorbike driving to ship his message to Mid-Michigan.

“It’s important to know that it’s going to impact people right here, right in this neighborhood, right in the neighborhood next to us and the one after that,” mentioned Peters. “This is a problem that’s truly a local problem.”

Peters says cuts made in President Trump’s Huge, Lovely Invoice make no sense and make monetary deficits worse. 

“Every dollar that you invest in a child before school in Head Start, if you look at the economists who study it, actually saves about seven dollars of taxpayer money down the road because people are able to sustain themselves, lead the kind of life that we all want, and be a part of the middle class and have those aspirations,” mentioned Peters. 

The senator says he might be talking together with his Republican counterparts about these points as quickly as they return from recess.
