Tory management race: James Cleverly knocked out – leaving Robert Jenrick and Kemi Badenoch as remaining two going through get together membership vote

Robert Jenrick and Kemi Badenoch will battle it out to be the following chief of the Conservative Celebration after James Cleverly was eradicated from the race.

Tory MPs held a remaining vote on Wednesday to cut back the sphere to a remaining two, who will then go to a poll of Conservative members.

After choosing up 42 votes within the remaining spherical of voting, Ms Badenoch re-established herself because the favorite after lagging behind beforehand.

Robert Jenrick, her shut rival on the precise, picked up one vote shy of Ms Badenoch, whereas Mr Cleverly – who was sen as somebody who might have united all wings of the get together – received the backing of 37 MPs.

The choice of Ms Badenoch and Mr Jenrick means the Conservative Celebration is heading in direction of the precise and the immigration shall be on the prime of the agenda.

Mr Cleverly’s elimination from the race got here as a shock after he rallied within the earlier spherical of voting following what was thought of to be a robust efficiency at Conservative Celebration convention.

“Sadly it wasn’t to be. We are all Conservatives, and it’s important the Conservative Party unites to take on this catastrophic Labour government.”

It got here after Tom Tugendhat, the previous safety minister who was working from the centrist wing of the get together, was knocked out of the race after receiving the least votes from MPs on Tuesday.

The get together membership vote will shut at 5pm on Thursday 31 October. The winner, who will turn out to be chief of the get together and the Opposition to the Labour authorities, shall be introduced on Saturday 2 November.
