LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — U.S. Senators from Michigan Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters are pushing new laws Tuesday that will reauthorize the Nice Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) by means of 2031—and improve its annual approved funding from $475 million to $500 million.

“The Great Lakes are a national treasure and central to our economy, environment, and way of life in Michigan. Since its creation, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has made significant headway in cleaning up Areas of Concern, protecting vital habitats, and restoring coastlines around the Great Lakes Basin,” says Peters.

The GLRI organizes efforts to preserve the Nice Lakes, the biggest system of freshwater on this planet, with objectives resembling conserving the water protected for recreation and ingesting, controlling invasive species resembling carp, and conserving native habitats. Their present motion plan, for 2025–2029, plans to prioritize controlling poisonous substances, air pollution, and invasive species.

“Our Great Lakes power our Michigan economy, and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative ensures we are protecting our Lakes for generations to come,” mentioned Slotkin. “From controlling invasive species to responding to algal blooms to build up our waterways infrastructure – the GLRI is a important software.”
